Where is the Downtown Salt Lake City Neighborhood?
Salt Lake City proper is made up of numerous neighborhoods that have each developed a unique brand. Each features its personality, culture, style, and intentional ambiance. All that goes into the making of these incredible communities is present in the heart of the city – Downtown.
The Downtown boundaries are roughly between North Temple and 1300 South Streets north to south. East to west, it’s about 500 East and 600 West. You would not believe the diversity packed into this relatively small area.
If ever you’re in Salt Lake City (and I hope you are), keep this in mind: Mormon pioneer settlers made the Salt Lake Temple the center of their world. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints placed premium importance on the temple. They consider it a sacred house of God. The entire city is laid out on a grid beginning at the temple, 50 North Temple, Salt Lake City, UT 84150.
The temple is the center of a grid system envisioned by the church’s president and founder Joseph Smith (who died before church members arrived in the Salt Lake Valley. Roads to the north, south, east, and west were aptly named, “North Temple, South Temple … ” I think you get it. Each street on all four sides of the temple was numbered by its position relevant to the temple – First South (the first street after South Temple), Second North (the second street after North Temple), Third East, etc. Of course, over time the city has grown exponentially. Finding your way around is a little more complex, but when you’re navigating downtown this is an excellent point to remember. The method outlined by Smith was known as “The Plat of Zion.” It was originally intended to come into being in the Mid-West. Trouble there, and the death of Joseph Smith caused the Mormons to look elsewhere for their Zion.
