Foothill Drive is the west boundary of East Bench. The northern boundary is 1300 South. Heading east, it does swoop further to the north to take in Donner Crest Condominiums, Canyon Crest Condominiums, Bench Tower, and Presidential Club Condominiums all on the south side of Emigration Canyon Road. The neighborhood’s southern border is 2100 South.

The location is one of the best in the city because it is above the winter inversion that sometimes settles into the valley. East Bench is lauded for its natural landscape, proximity to world-class medical facilities, and easy access to dining, shopping, and entertainment. It is less than 30 minutes from Utah’s famous ski resorts and about 30 minutes from the Salt Lake International Airport.

Who Lives in East Bench?

The population of East Bench is about 6,176. The median cost of a home in this neighborhood is $840,716. That’s 198% higher than the national average of $281,900. More than 85 percent of the residents here own their own homes. Those who do rent, pay a median $1,434 per month. The national median rent is $1,268.
The majority (25 percent) of people who live in East Bench are 65 or older. The next largest age group is 55 to 64 where 17 percent of the residents fall.

East Bench is an educated community. Forty-five percent of adults have a Master’s degree or higher and 39 percent have a Bachelor’s degree. The people in this neighborhood tend to have conservative values.

East Bench Neighborhood Highlights

Suburban Neighborhood

East Bench is a decidedly suburban luxury neighborhood with easy access to world-class medical facilities, culture activities and events, and shopping. Hogle Zoo is nearby. This is the Place Heritage Park, museums, fine art facilities, and live entertainment. Residents here enjoy nearby eateries and amazing scenery. Many live here because it’s so close to Utah’s world-class ski resorts less than 30 minutes up the canyon.

Chill Vibe

The vibe here is chill. Many retirees settle on the East Bench. It’s quiet. It’s almost sacred with Nature rolling every mind-blowing season right out in front of you in the mountains and valleys. Nature-lovers are attracted to easy access to trails that twist throughout the Wasatch Mountain Range. A great many of the houses up here are considered luxury homes. The neighborhood is luxury too what with front row seats to each season’s change.

Stunning Views

Nestled against the stunning Wasatch Mountains, this neighborhood is elevated with thrilling views of mountains to the east and the Salt Lake Valley to the west. The Wasatch Mountains are a part of the Rocky Mountain Range. The Canyons and Crags are playgrounds for wildlife and they feature spectacular seasonal scenes. Because Salt Lake City is surrounded by mountains, an inversion can settle among them. Homes at higher elevations are generally above the inversion.

Anderson, DPM – Granger Medical Clinic. The Moran Eye Center is part of the University of Utah System too. Because it is a teaching hospital, U of U attracts world-class medical experts. It is rare to find a community so well-equipped with medical facilities.

1. Donner Trail Park
2903 Kennedy Dr, Salt Lake City, UT 84108

Donner Trail Park is a stunning 14.27-acre park in East Bench at 2903 Kennedy Drive. Early Mormon settlers first accessed the Salt Lake Valley through Emigration Canyon. It is named for a group of pioneers who traveled to California in wagons from the Midwest in 1846. Tragedy befell the travelers. They were repeatedly delayed and ended up spending the winter in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. The brutal winter overcame 40 of the original 87 travelers. Most died by causes related to starvation.

The Donner-Reed Party got a late start on its trek to the west. When Lansford W. Hastings claimed he knew a shortcut to California through the Great Salt Lake Desert, the late starters joined him. They had 2,500 miles to travel and little time to waste. Hastings promised a party with 80 wagons they could save up to 500 miles by following his route.

The Donner Party originated from Springfield, Illinois, and departed Independence, Missouri. When the party reached what is now known as the Hastings Cutoff, they diverted from the established route at Hastings’ insistence. They crossed the Rocky Mountains’ Wasatch Range. It was a hard road for them. In present-day Emigration Canyon, the party ran into trouble getting through thick trees, brush, and hard limestone. They cut a path through the canyon that eventually became a main thoroughfare for members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints emigrants who came to settle the Salt Lake Valley.

Donner Trail Park in the foothills of the Wasatch Mountain Range commemorates the Donner-Reed Party’s contribution toward improving an otherwise treacherous route.

The party got to Truckee Lake below the crest of the Nevada Sierras in October, according to an account published by the National Parks Service online. The travelers were tired, hungry, and low on supplies.

“Some members left on a self-rescue mission and were able to reach help but not before resorting to cannibalism to survive. The others back in the camp also ate the deceased to stay alive,” the NPS article “Donner and Reed Wagon Train Incident” says.

Most of those humans cannibalized were deceased but two travel guides were reportedly killed by one man out of the desperation of starvation.

The survivors were rescued in the spring of 1847.

Today the commemorative park offers its community luscious trees and sprawling grass, unique historic elements, trails and more.

In 2022, voters approved a $10.5 million Parks, Trails, and Open Space General Obligation Bond for major improvements to the park. Improvements to the playground, signage, and unique elements that capture the neighborhood’s identity and history are all a part of the pending improvements.

This is a tremendous project to watch.

2. Hogle Zoo
2600 Sunnyside Ave S, Salt Lake City, UT 84108

The zoo is more than 42 acres and it is home to at least 800 animals. The zoo was founded in 1931. Children and adults enjoy the ever-changing exhibits featuring lions, tigers, bears, elephants, giraffes, penguins, and more.

One of the zoo’s highlights is the African Savanna exhibit, where you can watch zebras and ostriches roam. The Elephant Encounter exhibit lets visitors get close to the zoo’s elephants. There is also a Rocky Shores display, which features polar bears, seals, and sea lions.

Hogle Zoo is involved in conservation efforts to protect endangered species. They work with other zoos and organizations to help animals in the wild. The zoo also has educational programs for kids and adults. These programs teach people about animals and how to help protect them.

In addition to the animal exhibits, Hogle Zoo has a carousel, train rides, and playgrounds for kids. There are also food stands and picnic areas.

3. This is the Place Heritage Park
2601 Sunnyside Ave S, Salt Lake City, UT 84108

This is the Place Heritage Park celebrates the arrival of the Mormon pioneers in 1847. The park is named after the famous phrase by Brigham Young, who said, “This is the place,” when he saw the Salt Lake Valley. Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints fled from persecution in the mid-west and had traveled grueling mountain trails to reach a place they felt safe to practice their religion.

The park has many attractions that show what life was like in the 19th century. Visitors can explore a pioneer village with more than 50 historic buildings. These buildings include a blacksmith shop, a schoolhouse, and homes from that era. In living history displays actors demonstrate pioneer crafts and trades. There are also statues and plaques throughout the park that tell their stories of the pioneers’ treks West.

The park features a Native American Village, where visitors can learn about the culture and traditions of Utah’s indigenous people. The park offers various activities, such as train rides, pony rides, and panning for gold.

With beautiful views and educational experiences, the park is a great destination for families and history lovers. It provides a glimpse into Utah’s past and celebrates the fighting spirits of the pioneers.

4. Rotary Glen Park and Dog Park
65 Emigration Canyon Rd, Salt Lake City, UT 84108

Rotary Glen Park and its dog park are popular places to play near East Bench. Located near the mouth of Emigration Canyon, the park offers beautiful views and a peaceful atmosphere.

There’s are large grassy areas perfect for picnics, games, and relaxing. There are picnic tables, barbecue grills, and a playground too. Tall trees provide sweet cool shade! The park also has hiking trails that lead into the canyon.

Next to the main park is Rotary Glen Dog Park. The dog park has a large, fenced area where dogs can run and play off-leash. There are separate sections for small and large dogs. There are water stations for dogs, waste bags, and trash cans to help keep it clean. There’s plenty of bench seating for humans too.

Both parks are well-maintained, with clean restrooms and plenty of parking. Rotary Glen Park and Dog Park are great places for families, friends, and pets to enjoy the outdoors together.

5. Emigration Canyon

Go east on East Sunnyside Avenue

Emigration Canyon is famous for its beautiful views and historical significance. Pioneers entered the Salt Lake Valley through the canyon in 1847. To access the canyon, drive east on East Sunnyside Avenue. The canyon is about 8 miles long. Even if you never leave your car, it will be well worth the trip.

The road winds through lush forests and open meadows. There are several pull-off areas where people can stop and gaze at Nature’s gift.

Hiking and biking trails are available for people of all skill levels. Nearby Little Dell Reservoir is perfect for fishing and picnicking. The canyon is home to deer, birds, and other wildlife that co-exist with residents and visitors.

Many people love a good stomp in the forest from time to time. But shopping – wow, it’s a jungle out there? Here, shopping is an art and a social form of recreation that brings people together in the most unlikely places. Shopping is a household chore, a recreational adventure, a business errand, and a social event all wrapped into one glorious trip if you plan it right. There are many stores and professional services near East Bench too. My list can’t even begin to touch on all of the valley’s commercial offerings, so I’ll focus on five specialty shops nearby.
