Where is Rose Park in Salt Lake City?
Rose Park is one of Salt Lake City’s most family-oriented and ethnically diverse communities. Interstate 15 borders this community on the east. Redwood Road (State Route 60) is generally considered to be the west border. It stretches north from 600 North to the shared border of Davis and Salt Lake counties. This is the northwestern part of Salt Lake.
The Fairpark neighborhood is located just south of Rose Park. Although it is primarily residential, its centerpiece is the Utah State Fair Grounds. In addition to the annual state fair, Fairpark hosts beer festivals, rodeos, concerts, and the monthly Salt Lake City Flea Market and Swap Meet. Why is it called Rose Park?
Rose Park was developed in 1947 when a man named Alan Brockbank set out to create an affordable housing community for young families and soldiers coming back from WWII, according to a Jan. 6, 2023 article published by Utah Humanities at UtahHumanities.org. The article titled, “The Origins of Rose Park,” was written Nate Housley and a part of the organization’s Beehive Archive.
Suburban sprawl was rare in the area at the time because the city’s infrastructure didn’t support it. “His goal was to sell small, brick homes at a price that soldiers returning from World War II could afford,” Housley wrote. The land was inexpensive because it was located in an industrial area. It began as a working class neighborhood. Plans for the neighborhood were designed to resemble roses with a main roadway, American Beauty Drive, acting as a long stem. Some sources say it was designed to look like a single rose from the air.
“Following World War II, state investments in road building and water infrastructure allowed the growing urban population to spread out into neighboring areas. Developers started building tracts of single-family homes in the suburbs designed for nuclear families whose breadwinners would commute to work in downtown Salt Lake,” Housley said.
The proximity to downtown Salt Lake drew many commuters who worked in the downtown Salt Lake City are. Many railroad workers lived there too.
Athletes flock to Rose Park complex
